What Has Happened To Christians?
December2013
Wow, what happened to Christians? There was a time when Christians stood out from the crowd and were known to have love for one another - which included all people. Christians, at one time, were willing to lay down their lives for one another!
There is definitely a chasm between the Christian-right Christian and me and my idea of a true Christian. The Christian-right has morphed into something unrecognizable. These Christians are inundated with Fox News (specious news). They now hate poor and downtrodden people, especially people of color. This is a far cry from the Bible’s rallying cries – The poor you will have with you always…Love thy neighbor as thyself. The Bible gives no directive to hate people because they are poor, black, indigent, or just not like you.
The Christian-right is BIG BUSINESS now and this is definitely not what Jesus taught. Jesus threw the money changers out of the temple because they were auctioning Christianity off to the highest bidder. Christians today have opened the flood gates and allowed this moneychanger spirit to invade their pulpits, their teachings, and their Christian lives. The Christian-right has taken their pulpits and turned them into political dynamos for big corporations, the very people who are destroying them and their country. The pulpit is no place for the Christian right-or the Christian-left. Christ had nothing to do with the Pharisees and Sadducees who were the legalist of that time. The Christian-right however has totally turned the doctrine of Christ into the doctrine of legalism.
Christ loved the poor and downtrodden. The fields were gleaned every seven (7) years and this was given to the poor. Fox news (specious news), hate radio and their ilk-Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Bill O’Reilly, Sarah Palin, Ted Cruz and a whole host of others, have convinced the Christian-right that all black people are lazy, on welfare, and taking their hard earned money away from them. This is a lie from the pits of hell! All black people are not on welfare and are not all lazy. Welfare was created in the Depression for white women! The percent of white people on welfare is greater than the percent of blacks on welfare. This argument about welfare is a straw-man argument and one Fox news (specious news) and greedy corporations want the Christian-right to believe. This keeps us divided and the focus off the real culprits who are robbing our country and the taxpayers blind.
Wall Street threw our economy and the world economy into a free-fall and drove us right off the cliff into a Depression like none since the Great Depression. You did not hear a grunt from the Christian-right when this happened. These Christians constantly wave their flags as if the flag is God and profess to be “the true Americans”, all the while poor kids go to bed hungry and die. When Wall Street perpetrated a scheme on ALL AMERICANS, poor, rich, black, white, etc., you did not hear any outrage from the Christian-right; nor did they wave their American flags. Our economy and the world economy lost trillions of dollars, but they were silent! Here’s a novel idea - why not shout from the roof tops – YOUR TAX DOLLARS, BLACK TAX DOLLARS, POOR PEOPLE TAX DOLLARS bailed Wall Street out!!!!
President Obama has done nothing to the Christian-right but extend them a helping hand. But President George Bush, on the other hand, took the country into a false war in Iraq and robbed us of our national treasure. President Bush also hid the cost of the Iraq war by putting the cost on two different sets of books to make it look as if he was saving money. President Obama comes in and puts the costs of both wars on the book and the Christian-right attacks him for spending more money that any President in history. This is insanity!!
What would Jesus do if he were here now? He certainly would not be where some Christians are right now. He definitely would not be selling out Christianity in the temple. He definitely would not hate the poor and downtrodden. Christ loved all people, and while the Pharisees and the Sadducees were dressed up in their earthly garb in the temple with their legalism and profiteering, Christ was out feeding the poor with fish and bread. He was praying for the masses!
We Christians have lost our way. We need to get back to Jesus whose name we so easily roll off our lips in every sentence, yet hate people because they are poor and different in color. Shame on you, you hypocrite!
